CALGARY – Three members of the Calgary Dinos wrestling team have been selected to compete for Team Canada at the upcoming U23 Pan-American Wrestling Championships, taking place April 10-12 in Querétaro, Mexico, Wrestling Canada Lutte announced Tuesday.
Gabriela Cross,
Angelina Ellis-Toddington and
Joseph De Maio will all head south next week, as will former Dino Mark Schwichtenberg current assistant coach Gord Peavy.
This year's U23 event will serve as a qualifier for the 2025 Asunción Junior Pan-Am Games an be a critical pathway to the 2025 World U 23 Championships in Novi Sad, Serbia for the Canadian athletes.
Cross recently was named the U SPORTS Wrestler of the Year. One year after bringing home the national title at 59kg, Cross competed at 56kg this year and once again had incredible success, dominating from start to finish for her second straight national gold medal.
Ellis-Toddington shifted up a weight class to 68kg this year and also was crowned a national champion. The Lethbridge, Alta. product secured a pin in the gold-medal match to finish as both a Canada West and U SPORTS champion, helping the Dinos claim back-to-back conference banners.
De Maio continues to be a force for the Dinos men's squad. The third-year wrestler finished runner-up at this year's conference meet in 90kg before coming in fourth overall at the same weight class at nationals.
