CALGARY – The University of Calgary women's basketball team took its winning streak to nine games with a 99-66 decision versus the Brandon Bobcats at the Jack Simpson Gym on Saturday evening.
Dinos senior
Mya Proctor dominated the court with 25 points, four rebounds and an 84.6 field goal percentage. Four other Dinos also hit double digits.
Piper Ingalls took charge for the Bobcats as she amassed 24 points, five rebounds and four threes. Abbey Shand followed her lead with 14 points and two rebounds.
With the win and some help on the out of town scoreboard, the Dinos improve to 13-3 and jump ahead of the Regina Cougars into third place in the Canada West Prairie Division. The Bobcats sit ninth with a 2-14 record.
Both teams came out shooting well in a competitive opening quarter on Saturday. Falling behind early, Brandon came back in the final three minutes to close the gap to five, with Ingalls posting six points, with two good threes to end the quarter.
The Dinos swung momentum back in their favour with a 9-0 run in the second quarter and outscored the Bobcats by 10 to establish a 51-36 lead at halftime.
"Our conditioning in the summer really sets us up for our long season ahead, being able to play all game is important for us as it pays off now," said third-year guard
Lilia Skumatova, who scored 15. "We've been talking a lot about keeping our standards up and no matter the team we're playing, can we play to that level every game."
Calgary continued their efficient shooting performance in the third quarter, while their work off the board helped them pick up 12 points in the paint and push their lead to as large as 30. A 17-2 run by the Dinos put the game out of reach.
The night was capped off in the fourth quarter with a highlight reel sequence featuring Skumatov,
Christine Geraldo, and
Sammy Shields. A behind-the-back pass from Geraldo sent Skumatov down the court where she lobbed the ball into the hands of Shields for an alley-oop.
The Dinos continue their homestand next weekend as they welcome the Lethbridge Pronghorns next weekend, with action beginning on Feb. 7.
The Bobcats stay on the road and head east to Winnipeg to take on the Wesmen with a two-game set starting on Feb. 7.
