Dinos can't slow down Spartans

LANGLEY, B.C. – The Trinity Western Spartans remained unbeaten with a weekend sweep of the Calgary Dinos with a second consecutive 3-0 victory to take the weekend series. TWU's 25-23, 25-12, 25-15 win improves the No. 4 Spartans to 6-0, while the loss drops the Dinos to 2-4 in Canada West conference play.
 
Third-year middle Isabella Stothart with 10 kills at .769, two aces, and two blocks, Fifth-year middle Kaylee Plouffe with nine kills, three blocks, and one ace, and fourth-year outside Maryn Boldon with eight kills, six digs, and two blocks led the Spartans. Sophia Hansen with nine kills, seven digs, and one ace, and Narelle Arnold with five kills, four digs, two aces, and one block led the Dinos.
 
Third-year setter Tayana Dmitruk, with 31 set assists, led the Spartans' attack, while Anya Fehr, with 21 assists, led the Dinos.
 
The Spartans and Dinos were playing sideout ball through the early stages of the opening match. The Spartans' second-year outside Paisley Dickie used two aces and a solid serving run to put TWU up 11-7 and put Calgary into a timeout. The Dinos pushed back and used a 10-6 run to tie the set at 17-17. Calgary took the lead 20-19 after a kill from Hansen. After exchanging points, Hansen found the court again to give the Dinos a 23-21 lead and put TWU into a timeout. A service and attack error evened the set at 23-23 with Calgary taking a second timeout. The set ended with back-to-back kills from Plouffe, giving the Spartans the opening set 25-23. TWU hit at .132 (9-4-38), while Calgary hit at .481 (16-3-27).
 
The second set started with Boldon going on a serving run to put TWU up 6-0 and put Calgary into an early timeout. The Spartans kept rolling and extended their lead to 13-3 after a kill from Boldon. From there, the teams played side-out ball, with TWU taking the second set 25-12 on another Boldon kill, giving the Spartans a 2-0 set lead. TWU hit at .379 (14-3-29), while Calgary hit at .000 (5-5-24).
 
A serving run from Stothart led the Spartans to an early 9-3 lead to open the third set. The Spartans extended their lead to 13-6 after a second-year outside Emma Graca kill. Then the Dinos responded with five points to cut the lead to two points, 13-11, after a Hansen kill and a TWU attack error. After a TWU timeout, the Spartans regained control of the set to take an 18-12 lead after a Stothart kill and put the Dinos into a timeout. TWU continued their strong play out of the break to take the set 25-15. TWU hit at .520 (16-3-25) in the final set, while Calgary hit at .222 (7-3-18).
 
The Spartans finished the night hitting at .326 (40-10-92), while the Dinos finished at .246 (28-11-69).

Spartans had the edge in blocks 5-3.5 and service aces 13-3. While the Dinos had the edge in digs at 31-28.

Calgary has their second bye week next weekend, returning to the court Nov. 21-22 with a weekend in Winnipeg to take on the Wesmen.
