LANGLEY, B.C. – University of Calgary Dinos women's volleyball team fell in straight sets (14-25, 20-25, 19-25) to the Trinity Western Spartans on Friday night at the Langley Events Centre.
The victory keeps the Spartans unbeaten at 5-0, while the Dinos drop to 2-3 in Canada West play.
Calgary's first-year outside hitter
Kalyssa Komori finished with five kills and two digs, while
Sophia Hansen added four kills, six digs and two aces. Setter
Anya Fehr had eight assists for the Dinos.
Second-year outside hitter Sienna Driedger led the way for the Spartans with 11 kills, six digs and three aces. She was joined by middle Isabella Stothart, who hit .900 with nine kills and three blocks, while fifth-year middle Kaylee Plouffe added eight kills, two blocks and two aces.
The Dinos opened the match strong, jumping to a 7-1 lead in the first set before Trinity Western responded with a 10-5 run to take a 12-11 lead and force a Calgary timeout. The Spartans continued to roll, using five service aces to claim the opening set 25-14.
In the second, the Spartans took an early 5-2 lead before the Dinos battled back to within one at 15-14. Late kills and an ace from Driedger helped Trinity Western pull ahead 22-19 before closing the set 25-20.
Trinity Western carried the momentum into the third, jumping out to another early lead before Calgary tied it 9-9 on a
Leni Blanke kill. A 10-5 Spartans run put the home team back in front 19-14, and Boldon sealed the sweep with a cross-court kill to take it 25-19.
The two teams will wrap up the weekend series Saturday at 4 p.m. MT at the Langley Events Centre. The match will be streamed live on Canada West TV.
