Dinos light up Huskies for 7-2 road win

SASKATOON, Sask. – The University of Calgary Dinos women's hockey team erupted for seven goals in a 7-2 win over the Saskatchewan Huskies on Friday night at Merlis Belsher Place.

It was the first time Calgary had scored seven or more goals in a regular season game since Jan. 10, 2014, when the Dinos defeated the Lethbridge Pronghorns 9-0.

Playing her first game of the season, Brooklyn Anderson led the way with two goals, while Josie McLeod added three assists to pace Calgary on the scoresheet.

The win improves the Dinos to 7-3-1 and keeps them atop Canada West's East Division, while Saskatchewan falls to 4-3-2.

Calgary jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period, scoring three times in an eight-minute span with goals from Anderson, Evelyn Lawrence and Bree Kennedy. In the second period, Jada Johns, Sophia Zuck and Anderson added three more to give the Dinos a 6-0 lead heading into the third.

The Huskies broke the shutout when Kahlen Wisner scored on the power play, beating Dino goaltender Amelia Awad from a tight angle below the faceoff circle. Calgary responded with a seventh goal from Eden Carius, her first as a Dino, before Bronwyn Boucher scored for Saskatchewan to make it 7-2.

Despite the lopsided score, shots were nearly even at 25-23 in Calgary's favour. Awad, who leads the conference with a .973 save percentage, stopped 21 shots to secure the win.

The Dinos and Huskies are scheduled to meet again Saturday at Merlis Belsher Place, with puck drop set for 4 p.m. MT.
