Dinos downed in straight sets by Spartans

LANGLEY, B.C. – The University of Calgary Dinos men's volleyball team couldn't slow down the Trinity Western Spartans' attack on Friday night, falling in straight sets (16-25, 20-25, 21-25) at the Langley Events Centre.

The Dinos drop to 2-3 on the season, while the Spartans stay unbeaten at 5-0 after hitting an impressive .440 as a team.

Calgary showed flashes throughout the match but couldn't find an answer for Trinity Western's balanced offence. Will Kay led the Dinos with seven kills, four digs and two blocks, while Sam Kay added six kills. Setter Matthew Brown finished with 16 assists.

Kaden Schmidt led Trinity Western with 17 kills and three aces, while middle blockers Cory Schoenherr and Zach Yewchuk added 10 kills each. Setter Anselm Rein paced the offence with 30 assists.

The Spartans took early control in the opening set, building a 16-10 lead and holding off the Dinos for a 25-16 win.

The second set was tight through the midpoint before the Spartans pulled away late with a 6-2 run to close it 25-20. Calgary hit an efficient .364 in the set but couldn't slow down a Spartans offence that finished at .414.

In the third, the Dinos battled from behind to cut the deficit to 20-18 after a service ace from Cole Czepuryk, but the Spartans held firm to take the set 25-21 and complete the sweep.

The Dinos and Spartans close out their two-game weekend series Saturday at 6 p.m. MT, live on Canada West TV.
