CALGARY – Rookie goaltender
Alyssa Barrette recorded a shutout win in her first start Saturday afternoon to help the University of Calgary Dinos women's hockey team take a 2-0 win against the Trinity Western Spartans at Father David Bauer Arena.
The first year blocked out 19 shots to help the Dinos sweep the weekend and advance to 9-3-2 on the season, while putting the No. 9 Spartans back at 7-4-1.
"The team really helped me out there, I barely had any shots so I didn't really have to do much," Barrette said, laughing. "They helped me out a lot - they blocked a lot of shots - so it's a lot on them and it just made me look good, which is nice."
"She has battled a ton of adversity," said Calgary head coach
Josh Gosling on Barrette. "She got injured early [in the season], but she's been working through it. To have your first start and have a game like that, I think everybody's pretty excited about it."
Unlike Friday night's matchup, the Saturday's game saw scoring early on, with the home team making waves to start it off. It was
Alex Spence who retrieved the puck at centre ice off an awry pass from the visitors, before dishing it up to
April Klarenbach who was on her way to the Spartans' zone. A sudden shot from the top of the left circle found its way above goaltender Olivia Davidson's blocker, lighting the lamp at the 14:58 mark in the first period to open the scoring.
The second period saw a lot of action in both ends, but no results on the scoresheet. Trinity Western's special teams were especially effective, killing off three penalties to hold the Dinos to their one goal lead throughout the middle frame.
The third period was more or less the same game play, however an empty net goal at the 19:04 mark would seal the deal for the Dinos weekend sweep, courtesy of
Sydney Mercier to finish off her four-point weekend.
"We played really good today," said Barrette. "We had a lot of good chances. They were getting pucks to the net, which was really good. The shots didn't really reflect that. Trinity Western did a good job blocking shots as well, but we got some really good chances and scored one of the important goals."
Davidson finished the afternoon with 23 saves.
Calgary continues its homestand next weekend, hosting Manitoba.
"We want to continue our standards and continue pushing our standards," Gosling said. "We want to push our energy, manage the puck better, work on the details away from the puck and not take a step back."
Trinity Western will return home to host Mount Royal next weekend.
