CALGARY – One night after pouring in a season-high 105 points, the University of Calgary Dinos men's basketball could seemingly do nothing right at the rim in a 73-54 loss to UFV Saturday night from the Jack Simpson Gym.
Calgary shot just 28% (19-67) overall, including going just 3-29 from behind the three-point arc.
The loss drops the Dinos to 4-2 on the year, while UFV improves to 3-4.
"Sometimes the rock is going to go, sometimes it's not..." said fourth-year forward
Hayden Franson postgame. "We still have to do the things that matter that we can control: hustle, talk, rebound. At the end of the day if we've done that, we can be happy with ourselves."
Bennett O'Conner continued his strong play from Friday, scoring seven early points in the first quarter before foul trouble sent the UFV guard to the bench. The UFV defence held Calgary at bay, controlling the painted area after Calgary torched them for 50 points in the paint on Friday. The Dinos failed to record a made field goal in the second quarter until the final minute of the half. Despite the offensive struggles, Calgary only trailed 33-28 at the break thanks to a cold shooting start to the game for UFV, as well.
The rock fight continued into the third quarter with frigid three-point shooting plaguing both teams. The Dinos and Cascades combined to shoot 2-36 from three-point range through three quarters of play.
Calgary mounted its final push midway through the fourth quarter, clawing back to within nine with four minutes remaining at 59-50. UFV's Dilveer Randhawa broke loose from the cold shooting; after starting 0-6 from deep, Randhawa hit the three straight threes to put the game out of reach. UFV ended the evening shooting 4-21 from three, with all four makes coming in the final six minutes of the game.
Both teams return home next weekend, with Calgary hosting Winnipeg for Pack the Jack on November 21st. The Cascades head home to take on provincial rival UNBC for two games in Abbotsford.
