Lepage, Duncan headline strong showing out west for Dinos swimming

VANCOUVER – The University of Calgary Dinos swimming team had another strong showing in the early portion of its season this weekend at the annual University Cup hosted by UBC this weekend at the UBC Aquatic Centre.

Over the two days of competition against all Canada West schools, the Dinos brought home 22 total medals and finished second in the team standings on both sides.

It was a big weekend for Alexanne Lepage. The third-year standout won all four of her individual events on the weekend against the best Canada West has to offer. Lepage started the weekend with a win in the 400 IM, touching the wall in 4:37.46 – a full four seconds ahead of the next swimmer.

Lepage would go on to dominate three more events, topping the podium in the 100 breaststroke, 200 breaststroke and 200 IM. Her closest race of the weekend came in the 100 breaststroke, which she won by just under two seconds.

Rookie Rosie Housman earned a second-place finish in the women's 200 backstroke, coming in at 2:12.38 in just her second university meet.

Abby Gebhardt also turned in a strong individual performance in the women's 50 breaststroke, claiming third in 32.58.

On the men's side, Nicholas Duncan continued to make a name for himself with four top-three individual finishes over the two days of swimming. Duncan brought home the win in the 100 IM with a winning time of 55.45 – just edging out teammate Ian Cameron at 56.50 for second.

Duncan went on to take second in the 100 breaststroke, and third in both the 100 and 200 butterfly in an impressive showing out west by the second year.

Carter Scheffel finished second overall in the 400 IM, while Thomas McDonald (50 butterfly) and Hunter Payne (1500 freestyle) both also earned a podium finish with third-place touches in their respective events.

Calgary also finished second overall in six of the eight relay events on the weekend to round out a strong two days of swimming in Vancouver.

The Dinos will now turn their attention to the Canada West Championships at the end of this month, hosted this year by the University of Lethbridge Nov. 28-30.
