CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos women's soccer team stayed unbeaten with a 2-0 win over the Regina Cougars on Sunday afternoon at McMahon Stadium, donning special pink jerseys in support of breast cancer awareness and research.
The Dinos, now 10-0-2, strengthened their lead atop the Prairie Division standings, while Regina dropped to 3-8-1 after the defeat.
Calgary controlled possession early and generated several quality chances in the first half, but both goalkeepers stood tall. Regina's Peyton Magnuson made a diving save on
Sofia DiGiacomo in the 23rd minute, while Dinos keeper
Anna Demarbre turned away back-to-back attempts from Kirsten Koellmel and Taylor Mitchell mid-way through the half. The teams entered halftime locked in a 0–0 draw.
The second half saw a shift in momentum as Calgary came out firing. Their relentless pressure paid off just eight minutes after the whistle when
Mykena Walker found the back of the net with a powerful strike from outside the box, her second of the season, assisted by
Isabella DiPalma.
Riding that momentum, the Dinos doubled their lead just four minutes later. After DiPalma's initial shot was parried by Magnuson, DiGiacomo took advantage of the rebound and calmly slotted home Calgary's second goal, also her second of the year.
Regina struggled to recover offensively as Calgary's backline, anchored by
Rowyn James and
Jayden Berg, contained the Cougars' forwards. Magnuson maintained her effort, recording multiple saves late in the match, but the early second-half surge was enough for Calgary to secure the 2–0 win.
With the win, Calgary holds a four-point lead in the Prairie Division and will host the second-place Mount Royal Cougars on Oct. 10 in a key matchup at McMahon Stadium. Regina returns home to face Saskatchewan on Oct. 17.
