CALGARY – Canada West announced its 2025 football all-stars Friday, with four Dinos honoured as tops at their position in the conference.
Standout cornerback
Gideon Agyei, halfback
Evan Smith, linebacker
Connor Jones and punter
Joel Pipke were all voted as top performers at their positions this season by the league's coaches.
Agyei was one of the top defensive backs in the country this season. One year after being drafted by Saskatchewan in the CFL Draft, Agyei made the most of his time back at the U SPORTS level as a shutdown corner. The Toronto native wasn't tested often, but finished the year with six pass breakups to go with a career-high 26 total tackles, including one tackle for loss.
Smith was a force at the halfback position. The bruising 6-foot-2, 235-pound local product from Notre Dame High School helped lead the way for some big rushing performances for the Dinos early in the year. Smith also carried the ball a career-high 20 times despite missing a game and a half due to injury. He also found the end zone three times on the year – two coming on the ground and one coming via the first receiving touchdown of his career.
After his first full season as the Dinos' primary punter, Pipke returned and was not only the best at his position in all of Canada West but arguably one of the best in all of U SPORTS. Pipke finished the year with 46 punts on the year, averaging an impressive 44.6 yard per kick – tops in the conference and third best in the country. A total of 13 of his kicks finished inside the opposing team's 20-yard line, while 11 of them boomed over 50 yards, with a long of 69 on a field-flipping kick in Week 4.
Jones earns the all-star nod this year for his work on the rush/cover units. The second-year linebacker showed an early knack for his work on special teams early on last year, blocking a punt and returning it for a score during his rookie campaign. The Coquitlam, B.C., product followed that up with a strong sophomore season where he finished with 19 total tackles, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, one blocked kick and a pair of pass breakups. He also had a pair of kickoff returns, rumbling 44 yards at Regina.
