CALGARY – Mount Royal goalie Ella Filek finished with five saves and was huge between the posts all game as the University of Calgary Dinos women's soccer team saw their undefeated season come to an end with a 1-0 loss to their city rivals Sunday afternoon from Field 2 on the MRU campus.
The Dinos - who has already clinched the division crown a week earlier with a 1-0 home win over the Cougars - created numerous dangerous chances down the stretch and hit the bar four times in the second half alone, but couldn't find the back of the net in this one to finish the regular season with an 11-1-2 record.
Mount Royal needed the win to also earn a home playoff game, as they now finish the regular season at 10-3-1 - two points ahead of MacEwan for the second spot in the Canada West Prairie Division.
On a sunny day that featured steady winds all afternoon, with gusts reaching up to 40 kilometres per hour, it was evident early on possession would be a premium in this one.
The two teams combined for just four total shots in the first 45 minutes, as the game was scoreless at halftime.
With the wind in their favour, Calgary dominated the second half.
Jaden Tomaszewski created the first dangerous chance of the second for Calgary in the 51st minute, but Filek was up to the task.
Just a few minutes later it was
Grace Moore with the chance, but her shot just went wide.
Going against the run of play, Mount Royal was able to get on the board first in this one in the 59th minute. Tamara Djurisic sent a long ball to the speedy Dany Juarez, who got a step on her defender. Juarez was able to just get a toe to the ball and poke it past an on-rushing
Lauren Houghton as the ball just trickled over the line before a defender was able to clear it and give MRU the 1-0 lead.
The Dinos ramped up the pressure from there.
Erica Mysko made a brilliant move to get the ball in box, but was shielded away at the last moment for Filek to collect things.
Kaleigh Major took things over and multiple times looked like she had tied things up down the stretch. First it was a shot that went just wide right in the 78th minute. She then pinged one off the crossbar in the 83rd. Then it was a blast from near midfield that carried in the wind all the way on frame, but again Filek was there for the save.
Jayden Berg created one last chance for the Scarlet & Gold in stoppage time, but again her shot caromed off the crossbar.
The Dinos will now look to hit the reset button next weekend when they host Victoria in a Canada West Quarterfinal contest Friday evening from McMahon Stadium. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
