CALGARY – Evelyn Lawrence recorded a career-best four points with two goals and two assists to lead the University of Calgary Dinos women's hockey team to a 5-2 win over the Manitoba Bisons on Saturday at Father David Bauer Arena.
The third-year forward has become a key piece of Calgary's power play, helping the Dinos go a perfect two-for-two with the man advantage in the victory.
"I'm just happy that what we've been working on in practice translated to today's game, it was very exciting," said Lawrence.
The win gives Calgary its first weekend sweep of the season and improves the team's record to 4-2-0, while Manitoba falls to 1-2-1.
The Bisons came out strong, outshooting the Dinos 11-4 in the first period and forcing rookie goaltender
Maisie Cope to make several key saves to keep the road team off the scoreboard.
Calgary opened the scoring mid-way through the first. After a Bisons skater lost her stick, the Dinos broke in on an odd-man rush, with Lawrence setting up
April Klarenbach for the 1-0 lead.
The teams traded goals early in the second. Lawrence scored twice on the power play, sandwiched around a marker from Manitoba's Julia Bird, to give Calgary a 3-1 edge after 40 minutes.
"I was set up perfectly by the other girls and was lucky to get it in the net," said Lawrence.
Lawrence added another assist early in the third, feeding
Solana Cooper to extend the lead to 4-1.
Manitoba's Sadie Keller cut the deficit to two moments later, but that was as close as the visitors would get. Despite a late push, Cope finished with 30 saves to earn her first Canada West win.
Jess Martens sealed the victory with an empty-net goal in the final minute.
The Dinos are back in action next week with a home-and-home set against the Alberta Pandas, starting Friday, Oct. 24 at Father David Bauer Arena.
The Bisons return to Calgary next weekend for a pair of games against the Mount Royal Cougars, Oct. 24–25.
