WINNIPEG –
Adam Kydd scored with 2:31 remaining in the third period to give the University of Calgary Dinos a thrilling 5-4 win over Manitoba Saturday afternoon from Wayne Fleming Arena.
The Dinos jumped out to a 4-1 lead early in the third only to see the home squad roar back before putting this one away on Kydd's fourth goal of the year.
With the win, Calgary improves to 5-1 on the year in the early going. Manitoba drops to 2-2.
Connor Horning got the scoring going in this one with his second goal in as many games. The play started for the Dinos with
Hayden Pakkala getting off a pair of close-range chances that went into the pads of Bisons' goalie Braden Holt. The rebound eventually went to Horning, who moved to find a good angle and fired the puck past a pair of Manitoba defenders and Holt to give Calgary the 1-0 lead 11:44 into the game.
Things opened up in the second, starting with yet another Dinos' newcomer potting his first goal. This time it was third-year forward
Davis Fry finding the back of the net, one-timing a nice feed from
Matt Corbet for the 2-0 lead early in the second.
Manitoba got on the board less than a minute later to make it a game again, but
Sean Strange put Calgary back up by two with just six seconds left on the clock in the second on a give-and-go for his second of the year.
Logan Hauer scored a powerplay goal in the opening minutes of the third to make it 4-1 Dinos in what looked like another convincing win.
But Manitoba had other plans. The Bisons got a powerplay goal of their own from Lucas Brennan at the 4:48 mark, before Sam Borschowa (6:44) and Dawson Pasternak (11:02) both also scored to surprisingly tie things up against one of the best goalies in the conference in
Carl Tetachuk.
The Dinos responded well to the adversity. With just over two and a half minutes remaining,
Dylan Anderson kept the puck in the zone and fired a shot from the blue line. Holt was unable to make a clean save, with the rebound bouncing right to Kydd. The captain got Holt to commit before making a move and calmly backhanding the puck into the back of the net for the game winner.
Kydd leads all of Canada West with 11 points (four goals, seven assists) through the first three weeks of action.
Tetachuk made 26 saves on the night to pick up the win, while Holt collected 34 saves in the loss.
Calgary squares off against Alberta for the only regular-season head-to-head with their provincial rivals all season next weekend. The series starts Friday in Edmonton before the two teams come to Calgary for a 7 p.m. game from Father David Bauer Arena on Saturday.
