Cougars battle back for weekend split

CALGARY – Jerzey Watteyne and Sydney Benko each found the back of the net in the third period to give Mount Royal a 2-1 win over the University of Calgary Dinos Saturday night from Father David Bauer Arena.

Makenna Schafer potted one late for the Dinos to keep things interesting, but they couldn't find the equalizer in the first home game of the season.

Both squads move to 2-2 with the result.

"I think all in all, we're in a good spot," Calgary head coach Josh Gosling said. "We won't get caught up too much in the results. Our process has been good. Our team's energy is really good, and they've given us everything they've got. They just have to clean up some details."

After a quiet first period, MRU thought they had struck first 30 minutes in, but Kiana McNinch's tally was taken away after an official review due to goaltender interference.

Both teams finally broke through in the third.

MRU got things going on the powerplay. A snap shot from the blue line of the Dinos' defensive zone left the tape of Jori Hansen-Young and was redirected on its way to net by Watteyne to finally sneak one past Calgary goalie Amelia Awad with 10 minutes to play in the third.

Nine minutes later, Benko made it 2-0 Cougars after an empty netter.

Calgary kept up the pressure and finally broke through. Going back to even strength, Bree Kennedy found herself one-on-one with MRU goalie Scout Anderson. Anderson made the initial save on Kennedy's wrister, but Schafer was there for the rebound to end the shutout with 14.1 seconds left, in what proved to be the final tally of the night.

Anderson finished the night with 22 saves in the win, while Awad made 30 saves in the one-goal loss.

Calgary continues its homestand next weekend when Manitoba comes to campus for a pair, starting Friday night at 7 p.m. Up next for MRU is a home-and-home weekend with MacEwan, starting in Calgary Friday night.
