CALGARY – It was a big bounce back game for the Calgary Dinos men's basketball team Saturday.

One day after getting punched in the mouth by a physical Manitoba Bisons squad, the Dinos showed their grit with a 102-92 win to finish the top-10 showdown with a weekend split.

The No. 2 Dinos move to 9-3 on the year, while the No. 10 Bisons now sit at 10-2 in a tight race atop the Canada West Prairie Division with four weeks left to play.

"This feels good. It was a good, gritty win," Dinos fourth-year guard
Nate Petrone said. "All respect to that team (Manitoba). They're well coached. They have really, really tough defenders.

"They punched us in the face yesterday and we had to come back and show a little toughness. We're not known for being a tough team, but we've got some dog in us, that's for sure."

It was all Dinos early, as the home team raced out to a quick 11-1 lead in a stark difference in style of play from the night before. One night after its coldest shooting performance of the year, Calgary went 9-18 from the floor – including 4-7 from behind the arc in the early going. Petrone led the way with 11 first-quarter points to help establish a 28-20 edge after one.

Petrone opened the second with back-to-back triples to push the lead to 15. A three from Samuel Jensen helped the Bisons claw back to 37-29, but
Dylan Lutes got hot with two quick threes of his own to quickly answer back and put Calgary up 45-29 midway through the second. The Dinos went 11-19 (57.9%) from the floor in the second and controlled the pace to build a 56-44 lead after 20 minutes.

Calgary continued its hot shooting into the third, where Petrone continued to connect from deep to push the lead. A triple by Aiden Smith gave the Dinos a 76-52 advantage with 2:26 left in the frame, only to see Manitoba show some fight of their own and head into the fourth on a 12-0 run.

In a game that had the feel like the Dinos would coast down the stretch, the Bisons continued to battle. A steal and a slam by former Dino Manyang Tong closed the gap to 11 points before another triple from Watts cut the Dinos' lead to 93-85 with 2:33 to play. Manitoba would get as close as five with just over two minutes to play, but free throws from
Javier Ramos-Yzquierdo and Petrone helped salt this one away for the weekend split.

Petrone finished the night with a season-high 36 points on 11-16 shooting, including a 6-9 performance from three.

Lutes also set a new season-high in points with 18 on the night to go with six rebounds.
Noah Wharton added 15 points, while Smith chipped in with 14 and a career-best nine boards.

It was another big night for Watts, who led the way for Manitoba with 27 points on 10-16 shooting, including going 5-8 from behind the arc. Tong (15), Andre Gray II (11) and Mason Kraus (10) all also scored in double figures on the night, as well, for the Bisons in the tight road loss.

Calgary now turns its attention to its city rivals, making the short trip down Crowchild Trail next weekend to take on Mount Royal. Meanwhile, Manitoba returns home for a showdown with Alberta.
