Dinos suffer first loss of the year

EDMONTON – Fifth-year David Chung scored his second of the year to lead the Alberta Golden Bears to a 1-0 victory over the Calgary Dinos on a balmy Saturday afternoon contest at Foote Field.

The win helps Alberta stay undefeated at 3-0-0 and stay atop the Prairie Division standings, while Calgary takes their first loss of the year to move their record to 1-1-2.

It was a tight match as the score suggests, Calgary getting eight shots (one on target) while the Bears had nine (five on target). It was even in the foul and yellow card department as well with the home side recording 10 fouls and two yellows, while the Dinos racked up 11 fouls and three yellows.

The first half started quickly, with the Dinos dominating possession in the first 10 minutes leading to a header from Owen Antoniuk in the tenth that rang off the crossbar.

Alberta was able to break through in the 28th minute when Rilind Idrizi cut in from the left wing and found a streaking Chung who made no mistake from the top of the box for his second goal of the season to give the home side a 1-0 advantage.

The score would remain unchanged the rest of the way as the heat and smoke, which was 30 degrees with a definite haze at kickoff, turned the game into a bit of a possession battle. The best chance the Dinos had in the second was a ball from Efe Udolu-Joshua that found its way into the box and was just missed by a couple of Calgary forwards and promptly cleared by Bears goalie Liam Collens, who recorded his third clean sheet in as many starts.

Alberta takes on the Mount Royal Cougars Sunday at home, while the Dinos travel across the North Saskatchewan River to take on the MacEwan Griffins.
