CALGARY – Neither side could find a result in the Crowchild Classic for the second time in as many matchups.
With a goal in the second half, the University of Calgary Dinos men's soccer team secured a point in a 1-1 tie versus the Mount Royal Cougars on Saturday evening on the road. The inner-city rivals battled to another 1-1 score earlier this season at Dinosaur Field.
The Dinos remain ahead of the Cougars in the Canada West's Prairie Division with four games to go in the regular season. Calgary holds a 5-1-4 record, while Mount Royal trails at 4-1-5.
Playing on their temporary home field, the Cougars scored first with a highlight reel goal in the 26th minute. Ethan Keen booted deep a free kick from just inside the Dinos' end of the field. The delivery could not have been better as it landed on the head of Alex Kemsley and was sent past the Calgary goalkeeper.
Much like their first meeting of the year, Saturday's contest was fiery, with seven total cards handed out.
In the 50th minute, a foul was called on Mount Royal as
Jacob Hunter was brought down in the box while driving towards the goal. That put team captain
Gianmarco Plenzik at the penalty spot, where he made no mistake, catching the goalkeeper going left, as he put it into the low right corner.
Each team had their chances to break the tie in the late stages of the match.
Hany Shafie was the busier of the two goalkeepers and finished the night with five saves for Calgary. Sjard Strauss stopped one shot in the Mount Royal net.
The Dinos return to Dinosaur Field for their final two home games of the season. The action begins Saturday, Oct. 5, as they host the MacEwan Griffins at 2 p.m.
Mount Royal returns to action on Oct. 5 versus the Alberta Golden Bears.
