CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos men's hockey team finished off a weekend sweep with a 7-2 win over the University of Regina Cougars to wrap up the regular season Saturday night at Father David Bauer Arena.
The win sends the Dinos into the playoffs on a high note, finishing with a 21-5-2 record for 44 points - one ahead of Mount Royal for the No. 2 seed to earn a bye into the Canada West Semifinals.
"We had every guy chipping in, doing their job properly, and it was just an overall team effort tonight," said third-year defenseman
Sean Strange, who scored two goals within the first 12 minutes of Saturday's game and had a strong weekend overall.
Strange opened the scoring for the Dinos less than five minutes into the first, shooting the puck in through the back door after a quick wrap around the net by
Arjun Atwal.
Jake Poole got the Dinos second tally quickly after. A shot by
Max Patterson left the left side of the net open for the puck, and the rookie was there for his fourth goal of the weekend and 17th of the season – third most in Canada West on the year and by far the most by a rookie this season.
The first period finished with Strange bringing the score to 3-0 after coming down the center and nailing a shot top shelf.
Early in the second period,
Jadon Joseph scored shorthanded after a cross net pass from
Jake Gricius, shooting the puck high into the top corner.
Regina came back with a goal from Kolton Shindle, who nailed the puck in the left side of the net, bringing the score to 4-1 just past the game's midway point.
Connor Gutenberg was quick to respond with the Dinos' fifth goal, landing a shot through the fray of Regina defence after a pass from
Adam Kydd less than 60 seconds later to reestablish Calgary's four-goal lead.
Regina got on the board a second time early in the third, with Matt Culling taking advantage of an open back door after a shot from Paycen Bjorklund.
Jaeger White took advantage of the Dinos power play to bring the score to 6-2 with a top corner shot nine minutes into the third and
Marty Westhaver closed out the scoring, going five hole for his third of the season.
Adam Evanoff made 41 saves on the night, while Dinos netminder
Carl Stankowski had 18.
The Dinos have the next week off while they wait to see who they will meet in semifinals, Feb. 23-25 at Father David Bauer Arena.
"We'll be taking this week to really dial in the details and use the motivation as reigning champs to try to go back-to-back," noted Strange.
