CALGARY – Paige Hubbard scored seven seconds into overtime to clinch a 4-3 win for the Regina Cougars versus the University of Calgary Dinos women's hockey team at Father David Bauer Arena.
Friday's matchup was highlighted by a frantic five-goal first period that saw the Cougars jump out to an early lead. The Dinos evened the score in the second period, and it took until the extra session for the deadlock to be broken.
With the win, the Cougars maintain their hot start to the season and improve to 6-1-1-1, while the Dinos fall to 4-3-1-1.
The game's first goal came mid-way through the first period on a slap shot by defender Jules Stokes as her attempt found its way through a maze of players.
Regina doubled their lead just over a minute later on a power play when Megan Long launched a shot from the blue line that eluded Calgary netminder
Amelia Awad.
Then came the response from the Dinos team captain.
Off the next faceoff,
Rebecca Clarke skated in from the right wing and went top shelf on Regina goaltender Arden Kliewer. She added her second tally of the game only a couple of minutes later off a give-and-go play with
April Klarenbach to tie the game.
"Honestly, it wasn't the start we wanted. I just wanted to turn the game around and get the team fired up and know we're in this game," said Clarke.
The electric pace continued less than a minute later when Raea Gilroy put the Cougars back ahead on a shot that beat Awad low.
Calgary tied the game with five minutes remaining in the middle frame. A wrist shot from the point by
Miri Licis was redirected in front by rookie
Hannah Reagh and into the back of the net. The goal was Reagh's first as a Dino.
"We just got back to the basics and competed and did our details as best we could. We won every race, turned it around, and tidied it up in the defensive zone, which led to better offence," said Clarke.
Clarke had one of the best chances to put the Dinos ahead in the third period, but the game needed overtime, where Hubbard wasted no time skating into the zone and ripping home the game-winner.
The Dinos and Cougars return to the ice for a rematch on Saturday at 5 p.m.
