SASKATOON – Goalkeepers Kalin Roberts and
Anna Demarbre stopped four shots each in a tightly-contested match between divisional rivals Saturday as the Calgary Dinos and Saskatchewan Huskies battled to a 1-1 draw afternoon at Griffiths Stadium.
With the tie, the Dogs move to 4-2-3 on the season and remain in 4th place in the division. The Dinos, meanwhile, move into a tie for 1st place with a record of 7-1-1.
On a day that featured 80-kilometre wind gusts, the Huskies opened the game with the wind and their backs and took full advantage. They came out flying around the pitch to start the match as they looked to avenge a 1-0 loss in Calgary last month, earning three corner kicks as they controlled the possession early.
That pressure finally paid off in the 26th minute. Alyyssa D'Agnone thread a perfect pass through multiple defenders to Marie Kilcher. The fourth-year midfielder would go high on Demarbre, scoring her fourth of the season.
Despite the Huskies continuing to control possession, the Dinos would increase their intensity as they tried to avoid the road upset.
Going against the wind, Calgary created a dangerous chance late in the first half. After the initial threat was defended away,
Isabella Burtini picked off a back pass deep in the Saskatchewan defensive zone and made no mistake on the scoring chance, netting her second of the season to tie the game in the 41st minute.
Returning for the second half, the Huskies began to find themselves on their back foot with momentum in the Dinos favour. The visitors would see four corner opportunities to Saskatchewan's one and record five shots in the second frame.
Despite the aggressive play from Calgary, Roberts held her own in net, turning aside four shots including a game-saving swat in the 68th minute. In what was arguably the best scoring chance by either team, Roberts punched a shot from Calgary's
Aislin Phillips off the cross bar and out of danger to solidify a point for the Huskies. At the other end of the pitch, Demarbre also stopped four shots in a strong performance.
Up next, the Huskies return to Griffiths Stadium for a Sunday afternoon matchup with the Lethbridge Pronghorns. Meanwhile, the Dinos head to Regina to take on the Cougars.
