CALGARY – Forward
Brooklyn Anderson scored her first two goals wearing the Scarlet & Gold, but it wasn't enough as the University of Calgary Dinos women's hockey team fell 6-3 to the UBC Thunderbirds.
The Thunderbirds spread out their offence with six different players finding the back of the net as they begin their season with back-to-back road wins.
Their first goal of the game came just nine seconds after the puck dropped, as Mackenzie Kordic started the scoring.
Less than two minutes later, Anderson took a clean shot right off the draw from
Sydney Mercier, finding the tying goal on the power play.
The Dinos took the lead seven minutes later after a scramble in front of Thunderbirds netminder Elise Hugens where Anderson found the back of the net yet again.
The lead didn't last long though, as the Thunderbirds took advantage of a power play, with Jaylyn Morris capping off an eventful first period.
Morris' goal was also the start of five consecutive goals by UBC. Chanreet Bassi and Mia Bierd picked up markers in the second period, leaving the Dinos with work to do in the third.
"We know what we need to do as a team. We let up and let them walk over us in the last couple of minutes," Anderson said. "If we take what we learned this weekend going into next weekend, I don't have any doubt in my mind that we'll be good."
The Thunderbirds pushed their lead to four in the final frame with goals by Grace Elliot and Sophia Gaskell. With just over four minutes to go, Calgary continued to press and got a goal via some fancy footwork by defender
Caitlyn Perlinger before beating Hugens.
"We're learning," Dinos head coach
Josh Gosling said on the loss to the defending champions and what the team can learn from this weekend.
"I think a lot of positives came out of this weekend. We understand how we need to play and that when we want to push the pace, we will be in a better spot. We're young, and this is a great weekend of opportunity."
Both teams return to the ice on Friday, Oct. 11. The Dinos will take a road trip to Saskatoon to face the Saskatchewan Huskies, while the Thunderbirds will be back on home ice against the Mount Royal Cougars.
