CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos women's soccer team were downed in their regular-season finale at home versus the MacEwan Griffins by a score of 1-0 on Sunday at Dinosaur Field.
The story of the game was just about how strong the goaltending was for the MacEwan, as well as the emotions running high between both teams. With the results on Saturday, the Dinos had already secured the top spot in the Prairie Division, leaving the Griffins in second place.
Calgary finishes the regular season with an 11-2-1 record, while MacEwan fell one point behind at 10-1-3.
The deciding goal on Sunday came just before halftime. Grace Mwasalla threaded the ball between a couple of defenders to set up Alyx Henderson, who chipped the ball past a challenging
Katie French and into the net.
The Dinos had their share of quality opportunities to score, only to be denied by Griffins goalkeeper Elizabeth Knight.
"It's always a battle with MacEwan. We created so many chances," said Dinos head coach
Diogo Raposo.
Things got a bit scary for MacEwan 10 minutes into the second half. Knight would go down from a collision after saving a shot from Dinos' midfielder
Kaleigh Major. Knight left the game for the Griffins, and Sabrina Alexander took her place in net.
Not long after, Alexander was tested on a penalty awarded to Calgary. Alexander came up big to save the kick off the foot of Major and was quickly embraced by her teammates.
The Dinos remained aggressive with chances to score but could not capitalize to tie the game.
After the game, Calgary honoured three graduating players:
Rachel Barlow,
Jayden Berg, and
Jade Kao.
Next up for both teams is the post-season.
"We'll focus on us for the most part. Of course we're going to watch films on how we'll adapt a couple things. Teams are very good in this league and they'll watch our games and they'll try to counteract, but we'll focus primarily on us," stated Raposo.
Calgary and MacEwan will begin the Canada West Playoffs at home.
