Durante, Kollman lead Dinos past Griffins

CALGARY – Goaltender Gabriella Durante made 22 saves to lead the University of Calgary Dinos women's hockey team to a 4-0 shutout of the MacEwan Griffins on Saturday night at Father David Bauer Arena.

Courtney Kollman potted a pair of goals and finished the weekend with six points as Calgary extended their win streak to four games. The Dinos are now 8-11-1 on the season, while the Griffins fall to 3-16-1.

"We battled hard, it was a close game yesterday and we knew we wanted to come out strong," said Kollman. "We've been working on the power play a lot, so to get two today gives the team positive energy going into next weekend."

The Dinos started strong with two goals in the first period.

Brooke Dennett's backhand opened the scoring after a shot attempt by Jada Johns left the Griffins' net unattended on the left side.

After killing off a penalty, the Dinos were able to take advantage of a power play of their own as a cross-ice pass from Sydney Mercier connected with Kollman for her first of the night.

The Griffins struggled to break through the Calgary defence and the home team extended their lead in the second period. Brooklin Fry started the play with a shot from the blue line, which was followed up by Elizabeth Lang whose chance hit the goal post. On the third attempt, Fry finished the sequence by beating MacEwan netminder Brianna Sank to make it 3-0.

With the play tightening up, the majority of scoring chances came on special teams in the third period. The Dinos cashed in with a snipe by Kollman before closing the door the rest of the way.

The goose egg was Durante's first of the season, while Sank stopped 31 attempts at the other end of the ice.

Calgary begins a home-and-home set versus the Alberta Pandas next weekend, while MacEwan is at home to battle the UBC Thunderbirds.
