Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Dinos Communications

Calgary cruises to eighth straight win

CALGARYMya Proctor and Myriam Kone each scored 17 points as the University of Calgary Dinos women's basketball team claimed its eighth win in a row Saturday with an 85-46 handling of the Lethbridge Pronghorns from the Jack Simpson Gym.

A close game early in the second quarter, the Dinos flipped a switch and never looked back, turning a 20-19 deficit into a 70-34 lead after three quarters en route to another lopsided win.

The Dinos finished the game going 12-31 from the three-point line, but were red hot in the second and third quarters, connecting on a combined 10-20 from deep to help create the separation in this one.

Calgary moves to 15-3 in conference play on the season, while Lethbridge falls to 12-6.

Proctor and Kone led the way for the Dinos in scoring, with Proctor adding seven rebounds and three steals in the win. Pollyanna Storie overcame some unlucky shooting early before finishing with 10 points and five rebounds. Kourtney Oss also had a strong showing, tallying five points and a career-best 10 rebounds.

Courtney McKee led the way for the Pronghorns with 11 points, while Kamryn Deklerk chipped in with seven points, four boards, three steals and three assists.

"It's multiple variations of our team," Calgary head coach Damian Jennings said of what helped his team shift the score so dramatically. "It was the group on the floor that just dug in and won some possessions – particularly the rebound battle. We started getting some paint touches. Our press – we tweaked the shape a little bit and that I think flustered (Lethbridge) a little bit. So, their guards are sort of on their back foot and I think that just broke the back of it. And, of course, it doesn't hurt if you hit a few threes."

Lethbridge came out of the gates notably with more tenacity and aggressive play compared to the night before and it was working early. Mhari Mattuli hit an early triple to give the 'Horns a 9-7 edge and a layup by Courtney McKee with 1:22 left in the first gave the visitors a 15-10 early lead. But a three-point play by Myriam Kone and a bucket by Sydney Milum had things all knotted up at 15-15 after one.

After connecting on just 29 percent (5-17) of their shots in the first quarter, the Dinos found their shot in the second, going 11-22 from the floor, including going 5-10 from three. Lethbridge held a 20-19 lead with 7:46 to play after a three-point play by Tobore Okome. Calgary responded with back-to-back threes from Lilia Skumatova and Mya Proctor and never looked back. That was the start of nine straight points from Proctor who had a game-high 14 points at the break, helping Calgary to a 44-26 halftime lead.

It was all Dinos in the third. Calgary hit five of its first seven attempts from deep and scored 24 of the first 26 points in the quarter, holding a 70-34 lead after three.

With the game already in doubt, both teams eased off the gas in the final frame. Louise Rouse led the Dinos with seven points in the quarter before finishing with nine points and eight rebounds.

Also notable from this one, Calgary won the rebound battle 54-33 one night after being out-rebounded 48-43.

"This was a good test for us," Jennings said. "There was some pressure on us right now. We needed to sweep here and go to UBC and challenge them on their court and then get used to that playoff mindset."

Calgary now has a week off before returning to the court during the final week of conference play with a heavyweight showdown at UBC Feb. 9-10.

The Pronghorns will also have a week to collect themselves before closing out the season at home against Alberta.
