Wharton’s hot hand helps Dinos sweep Pronghorns

CALGARYNoah Wharton poured in a season-high 26 points – 14 of which came in the fourth quarter – as the University of Calgary Dinos men's basketball team overcame a strong showing from the Lethbridge Pronghorns before closing things out with a 90-84 win.

The win is the 12th in a row for 10th ranked Dinos and moves them to 14-4 on the year. Saturday's win marked the sixth time this semester Calgary has scored at least 90 points in a game and the seventh time on the year.

The loss is a tough one for the Pronghorns, who fall to a hard-luck 4-14 on the year after their seventh loss by six points or less.

Wharton led all players with 26 points on the night, going 10-16 from the floor and 4-7 from three. In the fourth quarter alone, the fourth-year guard was a perfect 3-3 from behind the arc and 5-7 overall.

Nate Petrone finished the night with 19 points for the Dinos. Martynas Sabaliauskas added 16 on 4-7 shooting from deep and Javier Ramos-Yzquierdo netted 12.

Dylan Lutes also had a nice night, finishing with eight and eight.

Jack-Henry Fox-Grey nearly matched Wharton's heroic effort with his own performance, racking up a team-high 24 points for the 'Horns on 10-21 shooting. It marks the 12th consecutive game scoring in double figures for the 6-foot-7 forward.

Brady Baines connected on four triples and finished with 17 points, while Shae Gibb added 12 points and eight boards on the night.

One night after a 22-point win by the Dinos, it was clear the Pronghorns came out with more intensity in this one, building a 21-14 lead after one.

Calgary started to claw back in the second, but still trailed 39-37 at the break.

The Dinos took a 44-43 lead after a layup by Lutes at the 6:23 mark of the third quarter and never trailed the rest of the way, but the game was far from decided, with Lethbridge continuing to cause havoc with a frenetic style the rest of the way.

After a three pointer by Parker Fleming to cut the Calgary lead to 75-72 with 4:49 left, Wharton completely took over. The 6-foot guard wowed the crowd with a nice spin move down low to create a layup and push the lead back to five. The 'Horns answered with a bucket of their own on the ensuing possession, only to see Wharton drilled a pair of cold-blooded threes from way downtown on the Dinos' next two trips to push it to an 83-76 margin.

Sabaliauskas got in on the fun with a three from the wing to make it an eight-point game and Calgary would hang on from there despite a furious effort by the visitors.

The Dinos finished the night shooting 55.2 percent (32-58) from the floor, connecting on over 60% of their shots in all of the final three quarters.

Both teams now head into a bye week before returning to action. Calgary closes the regular season on the road at UBC, while Lethbridge returns home to host Alberta in its finale Feb. 9-10.
