MacDonald named U SPORTS Athlete of the Week

TORONTO - Sienna MacDonald of the University of Calgary Dinos track & field team has been named the U SPORTS Women's Track & Field Athlete of the Week, the national sport office announced Wednesday afternoon.

MacDonald took their talents to the next level at last weekend's Golden Bear Open in Edmonton. She racked up 4,139 points in the pentathlon - by far the highest total in U SPORTS this season and the most in U SPORTS since former Dino Niki Oudenaarden scored 4168 points to win nationals back in 2019.

The Airdrie, Alta. product posted personal bests in all five events of the pentathlon this weekend, including a huge PB of 8.27 seconds in the 60m hurdles - just shy of head coach Jessica Zelinka's program record of 8.24 seconds that has stood since 2007. That mark also is tops in the nation this season.

Other highlights include a long jump of 6.02m, clearing 1.65m in high jump, a shot put of 12.41m and an 800m time of 2:26.94. All of those marks also all rank in the top-10 nationally so far on the year.

For their efforts, MacDonald was also named the Canada West Women's Track & Field Athlete of the Week earlier in the week.

MacDonald will join their team back on her home track for the third and final time this season on Sunday as they get set to host the annual Dinos Classic. Events are set to get underway at 9:30 a.m. inside the Jack Simpson Gym.
