Kone powers Dinos to fifth straight win

CALGARY – Behind a career-high 24 points from second-year guard Myriam Kone, the University of Calgary Dinos women's basketball team cruised to a 90-63 win over the Trinity Western Spartans Friday night from the Jack Simpson Gym.

The Dinos were red-hot from three, going 14-28 from behind the arc and hit on 56 percent (34-61) of their shots overall to move to 12-3 in conference play with their fifth win in a row. Meanwhile, the Spartans slide continued, dropping to 8-5 with their fifth straight loss.

Kone led all players with her 24 points on a tidy 9-13 shooting – including 4-6 from three – to go with seven assists, five rebounds, three steals and a pair of blocks.

Pollyanna Storie (14), Lilia Skumatova (13), Louise Rouse (12) and Mya Proctor (11) all also finished in double figures on the night for Calgary.

Jayden Gill had a team-high 19 points to go with five steals to lead the way for TWU. Shemaiah Abatayo also had a nice night, finishing with 11 points on 5-10 shooting.

Gracie Corneau opened the night with a layup for the Spartans, but Calgary answered right back with Kone's first three of the game and the Dinos never trailed again. Kone finished the opening frame with 12 points to set the tone early and help build a 26-14 lead for her squad.

After a free throw by Rouse midway through the second gave the Dinos a 40-22 edge, the Spartans started to chip away. Gill started what proved to be a 10-0 run with a triple and Corneau added three points of her own – all from the free-throw line – to cut the deficit to just 42-32 at the break.

TWU had its best shooting of the night come in the third, going 8-16 from the floor, but the Dinos hot shooting of their own removed any doubt about this one in closing out the win.

"I think we came out really strong and aggressive. That's what we always try to do," Kone said postgame. "We're just trying to get everybody going (early) and together. Moving the ball, everybody getting shots up and celebrating gets our energy up. That helps us get more into our defence."

Calgary's defence had another 13 steals on the night, creating 24 points off turnovers.

The two teams will square off again Saturday, once again at 6 p.m. from the Jack Simpson Gym.
