Floodgates open for Dinos in 8-1 thrashing of Griffins

EDMONTON – The University of Calgary Dinos scored six goals in the third period to cruise to an 8-1 win over the MacEwan Griffins Friday night from the Downtown Community Arena.

One night after a hard-fought 4-3 win in the season opener that saw MacEwan goaltender Thomas Davis make an incredible 50 saves to keep his team in it to the end, the Dinos unlocked the stout Griffins defence with eight goals over the final 28 minutes of this one.

Calgary got off to a bit of a slow start in this one, conceding an early goal by Sam Simard 13:51 into the game and trailed 1-0 heading into the first intermission.

Midway through the second period, things started to click for the Dinos.

It all started with a great defensive stop by Noah King in transition, taking the puck away from a MacEwan forward and starting a three-on-none attack for Calgary. King went cross-ice to find Carter Massier, who slotted the puck to Tyson Upper for the tap in goal to level the score at 1-1 with 7:44 left in the second period.

Just over three minutes later, the Dinos took the lead on Max Patterson's second goal of the year on a power play.

A  one-goal game after two frames, Calgary completely broke this one open in the third.

It started just 2:29 into the third when rookie Jake Poole scored his first collegiate goal, redirecting a Brendan De Jong pass in the air to make it 3-1.

Patterson scored his third of the season seven minutes in and Colson Gengenbach potted his first of the year at the 10:08 mark – both on power plays – to make it 5-1.

With just over five minutes remaining, Connor Gutenberg started an attack from his own end. Using a give-and-go with teammate Jake Gricius, Gutenberg found an opening and netted his second of the year to make it 6-1.

Rookie Dallon Melin scored his second in as many games, while De Jong also added his name to the scoresheet – again both on the power play – to wrap this one up.

Carl Stankowski got the nod in net for the Dinos in this one, making some nice saves early and finishing the night with 15 stops on 16 shots.

In all, Calgary outshot its opponents 48-16, including a 24-3 advantage in the third period.

The Dinos return back home to Father David Bauer Arena for both of next weekend's contests, hosting Trinity Western for a Friday-Saturday doubleheader, starting at 7 p.m. Friday night.
