MONTREAL - The honours continue to roll in for
Sydney Mercier.
After already being named the top rookie in Canada West just under one month ago, the standout newcomer for the Calgary Dinos women's hockey team was named the U SPORTS Rookie of the Year, as well as a member of the national all-rookie team, as both were announced Wednesday evening at the All-Canadian Gala.
Mercier was an offensive force right out of the gates, tallying a pair of assists in just her second collegiate game and finding the back of the net one game later. She finished the season scoring nine goals and registering 13 assists for 22 points in the regular season, stepping into a major role for her Calgary Dinos right away. She also added a pair of assists in her first postseason action at the university level.
The Saskatoon product was the second-leading scorer for the Scarlet & Gold, helping them earn a fourth-place finish in the regular season in Canada West. She picked up steam down the stretch, pushing her team to eight wins in their final 10 games of the regular season.
Aside from her offensive talents and grit, Mercier showed her all-around value. She was a +13 in the regular season, despite her Dinos only posting five goals more than they allowed.
