WINNIPEG – Alli Borrow sure seems to enjoy playing Manitoba.
The fifth-year forward notched her second hat trick against the Bisons this season and had a hand in all four goals of a 4-0 win for the University of Calgary Dinos Saturday from Wayne Fleming Arena.
The win is a big one for Calgary, securing all four points from the weekend road trip and improving to 13-9-4 on the year. The loss is a tough one for the Bisons, who are in a tight battle for the sixth and final playoff spot, now sitting at 11-14-1 overall and still three points back of Trinity Western with two games to play.
Despite being outshot in the opening frame, the Dinos created the more dangerous chances and were unlucky not to find the back of the net in the first 20 minutes.
Erin Armstrong had a blast from the top of the zone midway through the frame, but Emily Shippam was up to the task with the pad save.
Just before the end of the first,
Madeline Stanley was able to send a bouncing shot at the far post that nearly trickled in before Shippam was just able to kick it away.
Calgary finally broke through with seven minutes left in the second. Borrow went flying into the zone down the left side and drew the defence's attention. As she broke toward the net, Borrow centred to a streaking
Rebecca Clarke who made no mistake, hammering home her seventh goal of the season to give the Dinos the 1-0 lead.
Borrow then opened the third with her team-leading 12th goal of the year. The Dinos won the opening faceoff and held the puck in the Bisons' zone before Borrow fired a low liner far post to give the Scarlet & Gold a 2-0 lead just 33 seconds into the third.
The senior then added two more goals in the game's closing minutes to balloon the lead of an otherwise tightly fought game, leaving no doubt.
Now with 14 goals on the year, Borrow sits atop the conference standings in that category heading into the final weekend.
Not to be overlooked,
Gabriella Durante once again was outstanding in net for the Dinos. The third year netminder turned away all 44 shots she faced for her seventh shutout of the season in earning the win.
Shippam finished with 15 saves for the Bisons.
Calgary will now turn its attention to a home-and-home with MacEwan. The home finale inside Father David Bauer Arena is set for next Friday, Feb. 10 at 7 p.m. Saturday's rematch in Edmonton has a 5 p.m. scheduled puck drop. The Bisons wrap up the regular season also in Edmonton for a weekend series at Alberta.
