Dinos down No. 1 Regina in overtime

REGINA – The University of Calgary Dinos women's basketball team has taken down the nation's top-ranked team.

Trailing by as many as 18 points, the Dinos overcame a slow offensive start to knock off the Regina Cougars 86-80 in overtime at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

The Dinos fell behind early on Friday night as they struggled to shut down the Cougars' scoring within the paint. Down 47-32 at halftime, Calgary chipped away at the deficit throughout the second half and cemented their comeback with a 13-2 run in the final five minutes of the fourth quarter.

Fouled with 0.4 seconds remaining, Mya Proctor sank the first of two shots to send the game past regulation. Rookie forward Louise Rouse scored the only bucket from the field in overtime, with the remaining 12 points by both teams coming from the charity stripe as Calgary pulled away with strong free throw shooting late.

Proctor led all Dinos with a career-best 23 points, while Mackenzie Trpcic returned to the lineup for the first time since November and had 13 points.

Calgary had to overcome the hot hand of Jade Belmore, who had one of her best nights of the season with 32 points and 14 rebounds for the Cougars

The win ends a three-game skid for the Dinos and is a significant boost to their chances of hosting a quarter-final matchup at home in the opening round of the playoffs. Calgary improves with 11-6 on the season and holds one of the conference's best RPI ratings.

Regina falls to 14-3 with their first loss at home this season.

The Dinos and Cougars face off again on Saturday at Regina's Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport at 5 p.m. MT.
