Seniors' Day win secures playoff spot for Dinos

CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos women's basketball team cruised to an 87-57 win over Mount Royal Cougars in the Crowchild Classic Saturday afternoon to get the weekend sweep inside the Jack Simpson Gym.

The win sees the Dinos close the regular season with a 13-7 record, while the Cougars finish out at 11-9.

Riding their winning wave from last night, the Dinos started off hot, particularly Madison Landry, who collected five points in the first 30 seconds of the game.

Throughout the first quarter, Calgary dominated, making excellent passes and keeping the ball moving. The Dinos made five three-point field goals in the opening frame, which added to their 21-point lead after the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Cougars tried to make a comeback, but it was no match for the Dinos, who were fully in their grove, both offensively and defensively.

An offensive highlight of the second quarter was when Calgary's Mackenzie Trpcic made a no look pass to her teammate Myriam Kone who easily finished the three-pointer from the corner.

Calgary hit the half with a 48-24 lead, assisting on 16 of their 18 made field goals in the opening 20 minutes.

After halftime, the Dinos came out with a calmer demeanor, clearly comfortable with their strong lead. They did, however, have to fight off their feisty opponents who tried to claw their way back into the game.

Landry finished as the top scorer on the night with 16 points. Mya Proctor added 15, while Annacy Palmer chipped in with 12 points, while also leading the score sheet Saturday in rebounds (six), assists (five) and blocks (two).

In all, 10 different Dinos found their way into the scoring column in Saturday's win, with the Scarlet & Gold finishing with 26 total assists – two shy of a season high.

Tanis Metcalfe led the way for Mount Royal with 13 points, six rebounds and four assists.

Saturday's game was the final home regular season contest for three Dinos, with Landry, Trpcic and Bobbi-Jo Colburn all recognized as part of the Seniors' Day celebration following the game.

"We had a really good start," Proctor said. "We came out punching first and overall we did a good job of keeping our level the same. Although there were a few dips, we did what we needed to do this weekend.

"We are sad about our seniors leaving us. We love our seniors and they do so much for us, but we wanted to finish the season off strong and do it for them and we are ready for the playoffs."

With the win, the Dinos now clinch a top-four spot in this year's Canada West postseason tournament and will host a quarter-final game on Feb. 18. The Cougars also advance to this year's postseason. Both teams' opponents are still to be determined.
