Dinos honour academic excellence of 177 student-athletes

CALGARY – The University of Calgary celebrated their student-athletes Thursday morning at the annual Academic All-Canadian Breakfast in MacEwan Hall. A total of 177 Dinos across 19 sports were recognized for their outstanding performances in the classroom during the 2022-23 school year.

The 177 total is the fourth-most in university history, representing approximately one-third of all varsity student-athletes and putting the total number at 3,194 since the program's inception in 1990.

Dinos Academic All-Canadian History

"Celebrating a long-standing tradition of excellence in the classroom is a major highlight for all of us within Dinos Athletics," UCalgary Director of Athletics Ben Matchett said. "Being an Academic All-Canadian is a remarkable achievement, and we are once again proud to have some of the nation's best on our campus."

The Faculty of Kinesiology led the way with 39 students earning Academic All-Canadian or Dinos All-Academic status, followed closely by Arts (38) and the Haskayne School of Business (32). The Schulich School of Engineering tallied 21 this year, as did the Faculty of Science. A total of 13 individuals were recognized for their work in Graduate Studies. The Werklund School of Education (8), Cumming School of Medicine (7), Nursing (4) and Open Studies (1) rounded out the faculties with academic honours from the 2022-23 school year.

All Dinos programs were once again represented on the list. Women's hockey, men's soccer and women's swimming all tied for the most representatives on a given team with 14, followed by women's soccer and women's rugby with 12 each.

To become an Academic All-Canadian, a student-athlete must achieve an average of 80 percent or higher while representing their institution on a varsity team.

Varsity student-athletes in sports not sanctioned by U SPORTS (currently golf) who meet the Academic All-Canadian criteria are honoured as 'Dinos All-Academic.' In 2022-23, eight golfers earned this status.
