The Dinos open their Canada West season at KICKOFF XIX against UBC, with Calgary picked fourth and the Thunderbirds third in this year's preseason coaches' poll.

Calgary enters off a 39-24 preseason win over the Regina Rams on Aug. 23 in Medicine Hat, with a young roster that gets a boost from a few key veterans. Head coach Ryan Sheahan, entering his third season at the helm, welcomes back receiver Matt Sibley and linebacker Osasere Odemwingie for one final season with the Scarlet & Gold – Sibley taken by the Calgary Stampeders and Odemwingie by the Saskatchewan Roughriders in this year's CFL Draft. Quarterback David Jordan also returns for his second season after a solid rookie campaign, having spent the off-season honing his game through the CFL Quarterback Internship Program.

UBC finished 3-5 in Canada West play a season ago. The two programs met once last season, with UBC edging Calgary 23-22 in Vancouver.

Player to Watch: Matt Sibley – rising through the prospect ranks in the off-season through his performances at the CFL Combines, Sibley was selected by the hometown Stampeders and earned valuable experience this summer with the team's receiving core – learning from a group that includes former Dino Jalen Philpot.

The Dinos open their Canada West women's rugby season at home against the Pronghorns, with Simon Chi entering his 17th season as head coach.

The team welcomes a number of new players, including local standouts Austyn and Kayel LaBelle. Their arrival brings the Dinos' total to four LaBelle sisters, along with their cousin Kiera Andasol Dubyk – believed to be the first U SPORTS roster with five family members on it.

Lethbridge swept both matchups between the two teams last season.

Player to Watch: Kenzie McEachern-Shields – The back led the Dinos with three tries last fall and returns to the team following a second consecutive summer playing for the Hunter Wildfires in Australia.

Ranked third in the Canada West preseason coaches' poll, the Dinos open regular season play with back-to-back contests against the Bisons, looking to build on last season's bronze medal finish.

Head coach Diogo Raposo's side capped 2025 by winning the bronze medal match 3-0 over crosstown rival Mount Royal. Calgary went through a five-match preseason slate that opened with a 1-0 win over UBC Okanagan and a scoreless draw with Simon Fraser, also facing Trinity Western, Fraser Valley and Saskatchewan as the roster worked toward game shape.

Manitoba enters after finishing the 2025 season 3-9-2 in Canada West play and is led by first-year interim head coach Fabio Capone.

Player to Watch: Mykena Walker – A Canada West Prairie Division All-Star in 2025, Walker anchored a Calgary backline that allowed just five goals all season. The senior also flashed her attacking side this summer, tying for the Alberta Premier League scoring lead with nine goals.

The Dinos season could not have gotten off to a better start. Calgary opened its campaign last week with a thrilling 2-0 win over rival Mount Royal – the defending Canada West champions.

Goals from Luis Rangel-Kataev and a bicycle kick from Jacob Hunter powered the win in front of nearly 1,800 fans at McMahon Stadium.

The Dinos will travel north this week for a pair of games against provincial foes Alberta and MacEwan. The Golden Bears closed out their preseason with a 2-1 win over the Griffins as both teams prepared to open their Canada West seasons.

Player to Watch: Jacob Hunter – Not only did Hunter score a highlight-reel goal versus Mount Royal, he also assisted on the second-half insurance tally by Rangel-Kataev. Hunter returns for his final season with the Dinos after an injury kept him off the field for most of 2025.
