VICTORIA – One night after a 78-42 season-opening win, the University of Calgary Dinos cruised to an 83-60 win Saturday to complete the weekend sweep of the University of Victoria inside CARSA Performance Gym.
Mya Proctor and
Louise Rouse each had 15 points, while
Lilia Skumatova added 14 in another balanced performance by the Dinos as they move to 2-0 to start the season.
Three Vikes players finished in double digits in scoring, led by Karis de Paiva with 15 on the night as Victoria falls to 0-2 on the year in the early going.
Much like Friday night's performance, the Dinos jumped out to a strong start and held a 24-19 lead after the first quarter, connecting on 4-of-9 three pointers in the opening stanza.
Calgary cranked up the defensive pressure in the second, forcing 12 first-half turnovers that produced 21 points for the Dinos as they carried a 42-30 lead at halftime.
The third quarter was all Calgary. Nine different Dinos scored in the period, starting the second half on a 15-0 run. A bucket by
Milica Gajic with 4:16 to go in the third ballooned the lead to 31 in what proved to be the largest advantage of the night for Calgary. In all, they outscored the Vikes 27-13 in the frame to build a 69-43 cushion heading into the fourth.
From there, the Scarlet & Gold comfortably closed this one out to move to 2-0 on the year.
In addition to her 15 points, Proctor stuffed the stat sheet with seven steals, five assists – both career highs – and three rebounds in just 21 minutes.
Rouse scored her 15 points on 5-10 shooting to go with a perfect 5-5 performance from the charity stripe. Meanwhile Skumatova continued her hot shooting to start the season, connecting on another four three pointers to equal her performance from the night before.
Gajic and
Pollyanna Storie each added nine points and
Sydney Milum chipped in with seven in the win.
The Dinos shot 44.0 percent (33-75) overall from the floor, while holding Victoria to 37.7 percent (20-53) in another strong defensive performance.
Up next, Calgary has its home opener next weekend with a two-game set against Manitoba from inside the Jack Simpson Gym, Friday and Saturday. Meanwhile, the Vikes now travel to the mainland, heading to Abbotsford, B.C. to take on Fraser Valley next weekend.
