T-Birds win special teams battle over Dinos

VANCOUVER – With an effective penalty kill, the UBC Thunderbirds skated to a 4-1 victory over the University of Calgary Dinos women's hockey team on Saturday afternoon at Father David Bauer Arena in Vancouver.

After dropping their first game in regulation to the Dinos on Friday, the T-Birds responded to earn a weekend split. UBC now holds a 12-1-3 record, while Calgary sits at 4-11-1.

UBC held the balance of play in the first period after gaining momentum off an early penalty kill. It was the start of a busy penalty box door, as the Thunderbirds were hit with 12 shorthanded situations, but surrendered just one goal while down a skater.

Taking advantage of their own power play chances, the T-Birds capitalized seven seconds into their third power play of the first. A Cassidy Rhodes' snapshot from the top of the circle sneaked past Gabriella Durante to make it 1-0 mid-way through the period.

Just 1:35 later, UBC struck again. Taking advantage of some offensive zone pressure, defender Kailee Peppler wristed a shot from the point that found its way through traffic and into the net.

The Thunderbirds extended their lead with a second power play goal in the middle frame when Jaylyn Morris ripped a hard shot that beat Durante top shelf.

Sydney Mercier connected on the power play in the final minute of the second period, but that was as close as Calgary came.

Chanreet Bassi put the Thunderbirds back up by three with the only goal of the third period.

Kayla McDougall stopped 21 shots in the UBC net, while Durante made 24 saves.

The Dinos are back at home next weekend when they close out the first half versus the Trinity Western Spartans from Dec. 1-2.

The Thunderbirds go east to face the Regina Cougars, Dec. 1-2.
