No. 4 Dinos cruise to 9-1 win over Bisons

CALGARY – The offence was firing on all cylinders Saturday afternoon for the University of Calgary Dinos men's hockey team as they defeated the Manitoba Bisons 9-1, scoring three goals in each period and completing the weekend sweep.

The nine goals scored by Calgary are a season high, eclipsing their previous mark of eight – set during opening weekend against the MacEwan Griffins. In this one, a number of Dinos left their mark on the scoresheet, including Colson Gengenbach, a player Dinos fans are becoming accustomed to seeing score on a nightly basis.

Gengenbach, who scored the first goal of the game for the Dinos just 1:17 seconds into the first period off of a slick feed from Riley Stotts, is in the midst of his best statistical season as a Dino. With 20 points in 14 games, the third-year forward is just one point shy from last season's total. Gengenbach's play is a big reason why Calgary is off to a hot start, however he was quick to acknowledge his teammates when asked to reflect on his success.

"I'm playing with some great players in Riley Stotts and Jake Gricius," Gengenbach said. "They find me when I'm open and make it easy for me out there. I think it's also a little bit of puck luck, it seems the bounces are all going my way right now."

One night after an impressive effort by the Bisons goalie in a 2-1 contest, the Dinos quickly erased thoughts of a repeat performance. Gengenbach's goal set the tone and Calgary's continued pressure resulted in a pair of goals from Arjun Atwal and Adam Kydd – the latter of whom scored unassisted after stealing the puck from Bisons goalie Kolby Thorton before wrapping around and sending the puck into an empty net.

Calgary showed no signs of slowing down after the break, as the highlight of the game came in the second period as Mack Stewart scored back-to-back goals in the span of 22 seconds to increase the lead to five, chasing Thorton from the game. Ross Hawryluk, who was the hero of the game on Friday, was thrust into the fire, as Jake Gricius beat Hawryluk on the first opportunity just 36 seconds later, bringing the score to 6-0. Calgary was also dominant on the defensive end, allowing just one shot in the second period.

The lone bright spot for Manitoba came midway through the third period as they were able to break the ice and spoil Carl Tetachuk's shutout bid, as Josh Paulhus wired a nice wrist shot past the veteran goaltender. The Dinos would tack on three more goals in the final period with Jake Poole, Stotts and Connon Horning all adding their names to the scoresheet to win 9-1. Calgary finished the night with a 52-21 edge in shots, bringing their two-game weekend total to 106 in the series.

The Dinos will now prepare for a heavyweight battle, as they will host the UBC Thunderbirds for a battle for first place at Father David Bauer Arena for two games next weekend.

"Obviously every weekend is important, but when we're going up against a top team there are higher stakes," Gengenbach said of next weekend's matchup. "It's going to come down to our effort. We're both skilled teams, so we just have to focus on our details and outwork them."

The puck is set to drop Friday at 7 p.m and action will resume Saturday at 3 p.m.

The Bisons will look to get back on track at home as they host the 8-4-1 Alberta Golden Bears for a pair of games at Wayne Fleming Arena in Winnipeg. The first game begins at 7 p.m central time Friday and the rematch will take place Saturday at 2 p.m.
