CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos completed the weekend sweep of the University of Manitoba Bisons in their home opener weekend Saturday with a 74-62 win at the Jack Simpson Gym.
The win brings the Dinos to 4-0 for the season, with the Bisons falling back to 2-2 with their second loss of the season.
Louise Rouse continued her strong weekend leading with a game-high 16 points and 11 rebounds, followed by
Pollyanna Storie who had 15 points after draining five three-pointers – all in the second half.
Emerson Martin led the Bisons with 11 points – going 3-4 from behind the arc – and eight rebounds in a strong performance.
Saturday's contest was much different from Friday's 84-47 win by Calgary, with this one much tighter throughout.
It was a slow start by both teams Saturday. The Dinos managed to pull ahead with free throws from Rouse and
Milica Gajic, and five points from
Mya Proctor, but the Bisons shortened the lead with a shot at the buzzer by Tomas Arbos, bringing the score to 21-20 for the Dinos at the end of the first quarter.
Proctor started the second quarter off strong for the Dinos with a layup 20 seconds in to set the tone. Calgary's defence once again created havoc in the second, with a late burst by Amélie Collin and
Lilia Skumatova to make it a 10-point game at the break at 39-29.
But the Bisons clawed back as both teams started to find more rhythm in the third.
Sydney Milum and
Kourtney Oss brought the Dinos lead back to 46-36, but a 10-point scoring run from Manitoba's Anna Miko, Emily Johnson and Martin brought the game back to a tie with less than 45 seconds remaining in the third. Storie pulled the Dinos ahead with a three pointer to finish off the third quarter 49-46 for the Dinos.
Bisons opened the fourth quarter with a layup from Agar to make it a one-point game. Manitoba kept things close at 64-60 following a three by Anna Miko with 3:06 to play, but Calgary responded with an 8-0 run capped by a triple by Oss to suddenly stretch the lead back to 12 to all but seal this one.
The Dinos hit the road to face the Brandon next weekend, as the Bisons will come right back to Calgary for a weekend series against Mount Royal.
