Dinos sweep Spartans

Correction: This article originally stated that the Dinos men's hockey team broke a U SPORTS record with 27 consecutive regular season wins. U SPORTS records have only tracked consecutive regular season wins contained to one season. There is not enough information to confirm the U SPORTS record for consecutive regular season wins across multiple seasons.

CALGARY –
Colson Gengenbach picked up a hat tick as the University of Calgary Dinos men's hockey team remained perfect with a 4-0 win over the Trinity Western Spartans on Saturday night at Father David Bauer Arena.

The Dinos are now 4-0 on the season, while the Spartans fall to 0-2 in their first weekend of competition.

After being shut out on Friday night, it was Trinity Western who opened the scoring Saturday as Aidan Steinke set up Jeremy Klessens with plenty of time and space to wrist a shot past Carl Stankowski for an early lead.

A power play goal by Colson Gengenbach tied the game with five minutes remaining in the opening period, but the Spartans responded quickly on a goal by Jake Jurgeneit to take a one-goal lead into the first intermission.

Berk Berkeliev and the Spartans did well to keep the Dinos offence at bay despite plenty of scoring opportunities. The Trinity Western goaltender finished the night with 48 saves.

The Dinos took their first lead of the game six minutes into the second period on back-to-back goals 11 seconds apart by rookies. First, it was Jake Poole going shortside on Berkeliev, followed by Brendan Lee releasing a wicked wrist shot.

Calgary took a two-goal lead halfway through the third on a tally by Mack Stewart

The teams traded goals from Gengenbach and Mitchell Joss in the final stages of regulation before Gengenbach completed the hat trick with an empty net marker.

"My teammates helped me out by giving me a lot of chances to shoot the puck throughout the game," stated Gengenbach.

Stankowski earned the win with 15 saves.

The Dinos will have an opportunity to extend their win streak when they face the crosstown rival Mount Royal Cougars next week. The action begins at home on Thursday, Oct. 12 at Father David Bauer Arena. Tickets are on sale at GoDinos.com/Tickets.

Trinity Western returns home and will host the Regina Cougars in their first home weekend, Oct. 13-14.
