Dinos playoff hopes take hit with loss to Cougars

CALGARY – A pair of second-half goals were the undoing for the University of Calgary Dinos men's soccer team as they dropped a 2-0 result to the Mount Royal Cougars on Saturday afternoon at Stadium Field.

The contest was the final one of the regular season for both teams. The win clinched Mount Royal first place in the Canada West's Prairie Division with a record of 11-2-1. Calgary falls to 4-7-3 for the season and will have to rely on results on the out-of-town scoreboard to determine their playoff fate.

The victory by the Lethbridge Pronghorns on Saturday saw them leapfrog the Dinos into third place in the division. The fourth and final playoff spot will be decided in a match on Sunday between the MacEwan Griffins and the Thompson Rivers WolfPack. A win by the Griffins would send MacEwan into the postseason, while a tie or WolfPack win would give the Dinos the fourth seed in the Prairie Division.

Calgary managed to keep the Mount Royal forward at bay in the first half. Despite eight shot attempts, only two reached goal, including a chance turned away by Liam Hunter at the whistle.

The Cougars opened the scoring in the 50th minute off a penalty. As Mount Royal cut into the box from the left side, the Calgary defender attempted to clear the ball but brought down Skyler Rogers in the process.

It proved to be costly as David Schaefer capitalized from the penalty shot, beating Hunter to the right side.

Mount Royal doubled their lead in the 62nd minute as Josh Flaksma put home a rebound.

The Dinos kept chances closer in the second half, but Mount Royal goalkeeper Aidan Dumoulin stopped both balls he saw.

Hunter finished the game with four saves.
