CALGARY – One game after seeing their 27-game win streak come to an end, the University of Calgary Dinos men's hockey team got back on track with a 3-2 win over Mount Royal Saturday night from the Flames Community Arenas.
Calgary jumped out to a 2-0 lead early and added another late in the second and held on from there to move to 5-1 on the year. Meanwhile, the Cougars fall to 4-2.
Colson Gengenbach opened the scoring just over three minutes into this one. Calgary jumped on an MRU turnover as
Riley Stotts corralled an errant pass and went straight at net. His initial shot was saved, but Gengenbach pounced on the rebound and didn't miss for the 1-0 lead just 3:18 into the game.
Adam Kydd then doubled the lead later in the opening frame for the Dinos.
Zach Wytinck fired a shot from the left wing that beat the goalie but hit iron. Kydd was there for the rebound though for his first U SPORTS goal to make it 2-0 with 4:02 left in the first.
MRU finally got on the board late in the second as Connor Bouchard potted his second of the season at the 15:33 mark.
Calgary responded back almost instantly as
Jake Gricius netted his third of the year as he threw one on net on the power play to make it 3-1 with 2:43 left in the second period.
Blake Stevenson drew the Cougars back to within one with just over six minutes remaining in regulation to make things interesting, but
Carl Stankowski closed the door from there – finishing the game with 36 saves to secure the win for Calgary.
The Dinos start a home-and-home with Alberta on the road next weekend, playing Friday night in Edmonton before returning to Father David Bauer Arena for a 7 p.m. contest Saturday night. Tickets are on sale at GoDinos.com/Tickets.
