CALGARY – For the second night in a row, the University of Calgary Dinos women's hockey team kept the score sheet clean.
Gabriella Durante made 16 saves to lead the Dinos to a sweep of the MacEwan Griffins and a 3-0 win on Saturday night at Father David Bauer Arena.
Calgary earns a crucial four points from the weekend and improves their record to 9-8-3. MacEwan remains at the bottom of the Canada West standings with a 3-14-1 record.
"This time of the year it is about dialling it in and trying to get to the best level you can as a group, we played a really good team that works hard," said Dinos head coach
Carla MacLeod after the game. "They put us on our heels at the start and we had to find a way to dig out of that and that's what we want to see at this point in the year as it is only going to make both teams better.
"We have some different goals in front of us and at the end of the day we got our job done this weekend."
It was a goalie's game in the first two periods, however, the Dinos' offence would persevere and put them on the board before the clock ran out in the middle frame.
Josie McLeod ended the nearly two-period-long drought at the 19:15 mark.
Jolie Nafziger pushed the puck out to McLeod, who then took it into the front of the net and beat the Griffins netminder Brianna Sank for her third goal of the season.
Dana Wood brought the score to 2-0 for the Dinos early into the third period with her first goal of the year. Capitalizing on a turnover,
Sydney Mercier brought the puck down the left side of the ice before passing to Wood just in front of the net who then placed it past the blocker side.
With MacEwan attempting to get an extra attacker on the ice at the end of the game, Mercier rounded out the scoring with her fourth goal of the season as she beat the Griffins' goaltender before she could get back into the crease.
Calgary outshot MacEwan 28-16 on the night and kept Sank busy with 25 saves, including 12 in each of the final two periods.
Durante finished the weekend with 42 saves and a pair of shutouts, bringing her total to five on the campaign.
Calgary will enter a bye week before returning to action at home against the Regina Cougars, Jan. 20-21.
The Griffins will face those same Cougars next weekend in Edmonton.
