Wesmen escape with weekend split

CALGARY – Fifth-year transfer Raizel Guinto poured in a career-high 25 points while Julia Schatkowski had a double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds as the fifth-ranked Winnipeg Wesmen earned a weekend split with the shorthanded University of Calgary Dinos women's basketball team with an 88-84 win from the Jack Simpson Gym Saturday evening.

Less than 24 hours after their worst shooting performance of the season, the Wesmen responded with their best, connecting on 44.4-percent overall from the floor and hit a number of clutch shots in the second half to keep the Dinos comeback efforts at bay.

With the win, Winnipeg moves to 8-2 on the season while the Dinos - missing a pair of starters this weekend due to injury - fall to 9-3 in their first home loss of the year.

Madison Landry led Calgary in the scoring column in this one with 17 points. Annacy Palmer finished with 14 points – the seventh consecutive game scoring in double figures for the second year. Bobbi Jo Colburn added 11 points, Mya Proctor another 10 and Pollyanna Storie just missed her second straight double-double with seven points and 10 rebounds.

It was obvious right from the start this would be just like Friday's game with the two teams very evenly matched. The Dinos had a 25-21 edge after one that saw Canada West All-Star Kyanna Giles pick up three fouls in the opening frame.

With their leader on the bench, the Wesmen didn't blink. Winnipeg connected on 52.6-percent (10-19) of their shots in the second quarter and carried a 48-46 lead at the break.

Giles returned to the court after halftime and made an immediate impact. Her free throws with 1:43 left gave Winnipeg its biggest lead at 70-61. Colburn drilled a triple just before the end of the quarter to keep things close at 70-65 after three.

Calgary continued to scratch and claw in trying to earn the weekend sweep. A layup from Myriam Kone cut the deficit to just two at 72-70 with 7:05 to play, but responded with a 9-0 run, capped by a fastbreak bucket by Raizel Guinto. The Dinos were able to get it back to a one-possession game after a three-pointer by Storie late but couldn't get any closer.

The Dinos shot 50 percent from the floor in three of the four quarters and finished the game connecting on 47.8 percent – their second-best shooting performance of the season.

Winnipeg returns home for a weekend series against Regina starting next Friday, while the Dinos hit the road for a series at Fraser Valley next weekend.
