Dinos drop opener to Huskies

CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos women's basketball team came up short against the No. 7 Saskatchewan Huskies in front of the home crowd Friday night at Pack the Jack, falling 83-57.

Despite their strong fourth-quarter from the Calgary women, the Huskies big lead early was too much to overcome.

The Huskies now more to 11-2 on the year, while the Dinos drop to 10-5.

Saskatchewan was able to jump out to an early lead right from the jump, going up 22-15 after one. Calgary battled back early in the second as a three pointer by Myriam Kone drew things to 28-22 with 7:20 left in the second. The Huskies got hot from there, though, ripping off an 18-6 run to finish the first half and carrying a 46-28 lead at the break.

Calgary's cold shooting carried into the second half as the Huskies continued to build on their lead before a strong fourth-quarter performance gave the Dinos something to build on going into Saturday's rematch.

Maya Flindall of Saskatchewan led all players with 20 points in Friday's match and Kyla Shand led the floor in rebounds with 12, adding 17 points for the Huskies.

Myriam Kone made the most impressive play of the night, a Hail Mary three-pointer that got the home crowd to their feet. Kone led the Calgary women with 13 points - a new career best.

Calgary's Pollyanna Storie made a big impact on the court for the Dinos with 10 points to go with threes rebounds and three blocks.

Saturday's rematch is scheduled to tip off at 6 p.m. from the Jack Simpson Gym.
