KELOWNA – Playing in only their second Canada West matches, a pair of rookies led the way for the University of Calgary Dinos women's soccer team in a 2-0 victory over the UBC Okanagan Heat on Sunday afternoon.
Battling smoky conditions at Nonis Sports Field, Calgary received early goals from
Erica Mysko and
Mykena Walker before locking down defensively to preserve a second consecutive clean sheet for
Caley Leask.
The win sees the Dinos conclude their season-opening road trip with a 2-0 record, while the Heat are now 1-1 on the campaign through two home games.
"Being away is always hard, especially in the first weekend of the season," said Dinos veteran defender
Sydney Tait. "It was a good result, getting clean sheets both games, we definitely have things to build on."
The Dinos' first goal came in the fifth minute off a cross into the box by
Rachel Barlow. UBCO goalkeeper Molly Race was unable to corral the ball, allowing Mysko to get a touch and deposit her first goal in Canada West.
The first 20 minutes of play was dominated by Calgary, and the roadside doubled their lead inside the 18th minute when Walker got her foot on an attempted clearance and quickly booted home her first goal with the Scarlet & Gold.
After the scorching start by the Dinos, the Heat settled into the match, but could not generate much pressure on the Calgary defence and were held to just two shots on goal.
While Leask finished with two saves, Race's afternoon was busier as she registered five saves on seven attempts.
The Dinos return to Dinosaur Field for a pair of home fixtures next weekend. They begin with their home opener on Friday, Sept. 9 against the Manitoba Bisons, before battling the Winnipeg Wesmen on Sunday, Sept. 11.
UBC Okanagan continues a four-game homestand in Kelowna next weekend with visits from the Saskatchewan Huskies on Friday, Sept. 9 and the Regina Cougars on Saturday, Sept. 10.
