CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos women's soccer team continued their perfect start to the season with a 5-0 win over the Winnipeg Wesmen Sunday afternoon from Dinosaur Field.
With the win, the Dinos move to a perfect 4-0 on the young season, while the Wesmen fall to 0-3.
Calgary started things off strong right from the opening whistle. Within the first four minutes of the game, forward
Rachel Barlow found the back of the net for first goal for the Dinos. Just four minutes later,
Jayden Berg fired a shot from distance that went just over the keeper's hands to quickly make it 2-0.
Midway through the first half, Barlow launched a corner into the box where
Sofia DiGiacomo came flying in and hammered the ball into the back of the net to make it 3-0 just 25 minutes in to completely control this one.
"Today, we started off very strong," Dinos defender
Mykena Walker said. "We scored two goals early in the game. We're very happy to add points today."
That score would hold until the 79th minute when a pair of substitutes would team up for another Dinos goal.
Grace Moore sent a nice lead ball deep into Winnipeg territory, where a streaking
Layla Tarraf was able to get a foot on it to make it 4-0.
Calgary added one more to the score sheet late. Coming off the bench,
Jaden Tomaszewski launched a ball from the wing into the box where
Isabella DiPalma one-timed the ball perfectly into the side netting.
The Dinos finished the game with a 43-0 edge in shots on the day, 25 of which finished on net.
Katie French saw her first action in goal on the year for the Dinos, playing all 90 minutes in the shutout for her first collegiate win.
Taryn Raabe made 15 saves in net for the Wesmen.
The Dinos will head to Edmonton for their next two games, going up against the Alberta Pandas Saturday before taking on MacEwan on Sunday, Sept. 18.
Meanwhile, the Wesmen will return make their home debut, hosting Victoria and UBC next weekend, starting Saturday.
