Dinos to play for bronze after semifinal setback

WINNIPEG – In the eighth meeting of the season between the two inter-provincial rivals, the University of Calgary Dinos fell 3-1 (16-25, 23-25, 25-10, 19-25) to the University of Alberta Golden Bears at the Investors Group Athletic Centre.

Calgary will now play for bronze at the 2022 U SPORTS Men's Volleyball Championships on Sunday against the Sherbrooke Vert & Or.

"Going into the first game of the tournament, there were some jitters, we were playing a team we hadn't seen before, but today's game did not have the same pressures you'd expect in a semifinal because we have played Alberta so many times this season," said Dinos outside hitter Parker Siroishka. "It was a bit of a slog. We were a bit slow getting going and once we did, we had to play extraordinary to catch them."

Isaac Heslinga and Jordan Canham both tallied double-digit kills for the Golden Bears. Heslinga finished with 19 kills and Max Elgert added 48 assists to lead Alberta, while Hamish Hazelden had 13 kills and Tomas Sorra had 31 assists in a losing cause for Calgary.

Alberta recorded a .387 hitting percentage in the match, compared to Calgary's .325.

"This has been a valuable experience for our younger guys with the potential to come back to future national championships," added Siroishka, who graduates from the program this year. "To perform and execute at a tournament like this requires taking another jump.

"We had an opportunity to watch Sherbrooke play after our game, but it is a quick turnaround for both teams tomorrow."

The Dinos face the Vert & Or for the third time at a national championship on Sunday at 12 p.m MT. Alberta will face the Trinity Western Spartans in the gold medal match at 3 p.m. MT. Both games will be available online at CBC Sports.
