CALGARY – Two years later, let's try this again.
On Thursday, March 12, 2020, the Jack Simpson Gym was ready to welcome the eight best teams in the country for the U SPORTS Women's Volleyball Championship. Late that evening, though, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of the event just hours before the first serve.
Seven hundred forty-three days later, the University of Calgary will once again welcome the best teams in the nation for the national tournament in the Jack Simpson Gym beginning Friday, March 25 with quarter-final action. Semifinals go Saturday, with the national championship trophy handed out for the first time since 2019 on Sunday night. CBCSports.ca, CBC Gem, and the CBC Sports app will have live coverage of all 11 tournament games.
Tournament passes and single-day tickets are on sale now.
The Dinos, hosting the tournament for the sixth time in program history, will be joined by Trinity Western, Brock, Alberta, Toronto, McGill, Dalhousie, and Mount Royal.
Just like 2020, the host Dinos are slated to take on the top-seeded Trinity Western Spartans in their national quarter-final Friday night, with the first serve set for 6 p.m. MT.
Championship action begins at 1 p.m. Friday with Mount Royal facing Ontario champion Brock, followed by a 3 p.m. tilt between Alberta and Atlantic champion Dalhousie. Following the Dinos-Spartans match-up at 6, Toronto will face Quebec champion McGill in the nightcap at 8 p.m.
