Smith delivers on final day of 7s season

VANCOUVER – Ashlynn Smith starred for the University of Calgary Dinos women's rugby team on the final day of the CW Rugby 7s Series on Saturday at Thunderbird Stadium.

The second-year lock had four tries, giving her a total of five for the weekend as Calgary finished with a bronze-medal performance at the Vancouver tournament.

The series came to a close with the Victoria Vikes defeating the host UBC Thunderbirds 19-10 in the gold medal final. With the victory, the Vikes wrapped up their season with a perfect 15-0 record to claim their third-straight CW Rugby 7s Series tournament title, along with the overall CW Conference Championship.

The gold medal match was a riveting back-and-forth affair that saw multiple lead changes in the first half. Shoshanah Seumanutafa opened the scoring to give the 'Birds a 5-0 lead, followed by a Maelle Reed try to put the Vikes ahead 7-5. Kally King responded with a try to retake the lead as the 'Birds found themselves ahead 10-7 heading into the half.

Despite the strong start, UBC was unable to find an answer for the Vikes speed and depth that saw Renee Gonzalez and Beth Cudmore add tries to capture the 19-10 victory and win the tournament title.

The Calgary Dinos and the Alberta Pandas matched up in the bronze medal game in what was a physical battle that finished on the final play. The Pandas opened the scoring with two tries and converts, Smith provided her team with a glimmer of hope before the half concluded on a spirited try that cut the Pandas' lead to 14-5.

The Dinos continued to fight in the second half and finally stole the lead off a spectacular defensive play from Smith, who intercepted a pass to run the length of the field with no time left on the clock. The walk-off try earned the Dinos a third-place 17-14 victory in their last action of the season.

The beginning of the day saw UBC earn a 26-12 semifinal victory over Calgary to advance to the finals. The 'Birds opened play with tries from Savanah Bauder and Seumanutafa, but Smith's try brought the Dinos within reach as they trailed 12-5 at the half. Smith continued to shine as she added a second-half try which tied the game at 12-12, but UBC was determined to play the gold medal final in front of their home crowd. The 'Birds closed the game with tries from Olivia Sarabura and Jordan McLeod to secure a spot in the most important match of the day.

The Vikes blanked their opponent in the second semifinal as they defeated the Pandas 34-0.
